Cruelty Free Art Supplies..

My blog entry on brushes evidently hit a sharp cord with many. It wasn't intended to inflame, just to inform, but the response also hit a chord with me so I went searching for Cruelty free products, and was surprised to find very little.

I'm wondering if Artists would be willing to use brushes made from animal hair that was gathered in a cruelty free way; for example hair obtained from brushing your dog, cat, horse etc, or obtained from grooming. I would appreciate the feedback, as I'm thinking about creating a line of brushes that harms no animals

Also, it is still possible to buy and mix pigments and binders, and create various artist medium without using animal products. This is a good, if not a little tricky route to protect our animal friends.

  1. Hello Christine,

To answer your last question: Yes!

Colors of Nature offers 13 watercolor paints, and soon to be added oil paints, that are made with natural earth mineral pigments using an all vegetable based vehicle. On every paint jar you will find an ingredient list. In order to be certified by ACMI and PETA we needed to supply an ingredient list. We were certified as being safe for children and adults plus vegan and cruelty free.

I hope you will consider us as a solution to the cruelty free art supply question.

Please feel free to visit us at Colors of Nature or contact me directly.

    Thank you,
