Pence Gallery and UC Davis Art/Science Fusion Juried Exhibition
“Consilience of Art and Science 2011″

INVITED ARTIST: Catherine Chalmers, Guggenheim Fellow, Additional Invited Artist to be Announced
ELIGIBILITY AND MEDIA: Open to all artists and scientists. Original 2D and 3D work in any medium. Dimension restriction is at the discretion of the juror. Work must not exceed 50 lbs (exclusive of pedestal for 3D work). Framed work must be pre-wired (no sawtooth hangers).
CD SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS:
Up to three works may be submitted as JPEGS on CD.
Each image should be at least 800X800 pixels, no larger than 1500×1500 pixels,
and saved as JPEGS at the highest quality setting.
Name digital files with the artist’s/scientist’s last name, first initial, submission
number, and abbreviated title, e.g., daVinci_L_1_Mona_Lisa.jpg
CD should be clearly labeled with the artist’s/scientist’s name.
All other information relating to each image – title, size, medium, 100-word
statement about each work, etc. – must be mailed with the CD on the attached hard
copy entry form and also placed on the CD in either WORD or PDF format.
A vital part of each submission is the written statement (not to exceed 100 words),
which should clearly explain how the work relates to the connection between art and science. The statement may be displayed with the accepted work. To provide context for the writing of the statement, the goals of the exhibition are attached.

DELIVERY OF ACCEPTED WORK: Accepted work may be hand-delivered or shipped and insured by the artists/scientist to the Pence Gallery, 212 D Street, Davis, CA 95616. Expenses for insurance and shipping to and from the gallery are the responsibility of the artist/scientist.
ENTRY FEES: $50 (non-refundable) entry fee up to three works of art. All fees will be used for expenses and awards related to the exhibition. Make checks payable to Pence Gallery.
MERIT AWARDS: Cash awards will be given out at the discretion of the juror.
LIABILITY: The Pence Gallery will insure all art/science works while they are on the premises, through Mar. 7.
JURORS: James Housefield is an historian of art and design and a museum curator who teaches in the Design department at UC Davis. Before coming to the University of California, he was the NEH Distinguished Teaching Professor in the Humanities at Texas State University and Curator at the Austin Museum of Art. His research investigates the intersections of art and design, including book projects on the history of the Bass Ale logo and the design activities of artist Marcel Duchamp. Diane Ullman is a scientist and an artist known for exploring art-science connections through design and installation of site-specific public art, as well as teaching with innovative strategies that expand visual and environmental literacy. She Co-Directs the UC Davis Art/Science Fusion Program, is a Professor of Entomology at UC Davis and Associate Dean for Undergraduate Academic Programs in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.
Location: The Pence is a nonprofit art gallery, established in 1975, whose mission is to educate and inspire the community by exhibiting high caliber art by local and regional artists. The Consilience exhibit will be displayed in its recently completed Main Gallery space, measuring approximately 1000 sq ft, lit by a dramatic glass tower.
